Post 9/11 GI Bill®

The Post 9/11 GI Bill®also known as Chapter 33, is the most commonly used VA educational benefits program at Stanford. This program provides funding for tuition, required fees, books and housing. The level of an individual student’s Chapter 33 benefits is determined by the qualifying veteran’s length of active military service since 9/10/2001.

Tuition and Fees

Unlike the Montgomery GI Bill, the Post 9/11 GI Bill® requires the Department of Veterans Affairs to pay your tuition and fees directly to the school.

The VA has capped Tuition and mandatory fees funding at $24,476.79 for the 2019/20 academic year. Fees include the mandatory fees charged by the University and posted to your Stanford ePay account each quarter. Standard mandatory fees are Health Insurance, Campus Health Service Fee, and ASSU fees. The cost of books and/or supplies that are required for a course are the responsibility of the student to obtain and cannot be included in fees reported to the VA. Students eligible to receive the Yellow Ribbon provision of the Post 9/11 GI Bill® can supplement their capped benefit with Yellow Ribbon funds.

How Will My Benefits Be Distributed?

The VA has indicated that veteran benefit support, including the Yellow Ribbon provision must be “front-loaded.” Below you will find an example of how funds would be distributed based on VA regulations.

Monthly Housing Allowance

The monthly housing allowance (living stipend) is based on the following:

  • Students rate of pursuit/training time. For example, a student training at a rate of pursuit of 75 percent would receive 80 percent of the BAH rate (rounded to the nearest tenth).
  • ZIP code of the school you are attending (not your home ZIP code). This stipend is based on the Department of Defense's Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH) for an E-5 with dependents. This stipend does not require students to live on campus. To check the monthly stipend rate for VA students at Stanford, use the zip code 94305. Service members currently on active duty and veterans (and eligible family members) taking courses on a half-time or less basis do not qualify for the housing stipend.
